2102: The End Of The World? by Boots Hart, CAP

2102: The End Of The World?
March 26, 2009

In doing research on dwarf planets I arrived at Eris. Named for the goddess of Discord, Eris is the largest currently known celestial body among the recently expanded list of substantial-sized Kuiper Belt SDO (Scattered Disc Objects) - otherwise known as TNO (Trans Neptunian Objects) or 'Plutoid' type 'planetoids.'

(And if anyone would like to try a more convoluted sentence than that, be my guest!)

What caught my eye in the midst of all however was not only all the good stuff I found about Eris (which is rather a contradiction, what with the myth of Eris being She Who Must Disrupt)... but the persistent connection between Eris and "Planet X." And when I dug around about Planet X I came to another name: Nibiru, the supposedly "secret" Earth-killer which conspiracy theorists hold is out there zooming towards us even as our various world governments and NASA (et al) remain hush-hush about it.

Putting aside the obvious question (like, when was the last time the entire cadre of world governments, plus all the observatories and back yard astronomers - not to mention the scoop-happy media were able to keep a secret?) purveyors of the Nibiru death planet saga refer to the name occurring in the bible and as encoded various places... though apparently not on Beatle albums played backwards, though that bit of secrecy did go down well once upon a time.

Point being, all such whispered, hush-hush warnings allude to mixtures of the year 2012, End of Days theorems and the 'conclusion' of the Mayan Long Count (aka Tzolkin, Tzolk'in - or in the Mexican Yucatan, Cholq'ij) calendar.

Not to be outdone (or miss a trick at the box office) Hollywood is also about to contribute to the underground buzz by releasing a summer blockbuster-type film called "2012" all about the end of the world, a father's efforts to save his child and - as implied but not spelled out in the movie trailer (which you too can watch on YouTube) aliens returning to Mother Earth.

Considering the times we're in, the current patterns of transits, the economic difficulties which abound, the pockets of serious strife which abound plus the calendar date, Hollywood is right on track to get people worried. But let's remember, Hollywood is not all about social conscience. It's a business - a creative factory - which I can say because I'm a second-generation Hollywood studio brat with 20 plus personal years in the celluloid trenches.

But being that I'm also a professional astrologer, writer and someone with personal ties to (and interest in) Mayan culture and calendrics, I've elected myself as the person to collect some thoughts about all this and lay them out for all of us to contemplate.

First of all - the name. Nibiru comes from the Babylonian (Mesopotamian) creation myth called the Enűma Eliš. Dates of origin for this myth range from 7th century BCE to 18th century BCE (with the latter/earlier date seeming the most likely) and the link between this Babylonian version of creation and the Bible's version of Genesis is unmistakable. Being that all versions of the Bible have their origin in the Torah it also seems reasonable to look there for connectors. And indeed, if we do so we see that the Torah's version of Genesis refers (through referential imagery) to the Babylonian gods and the (then current) conception of existence, using but a few gloriously well known sentences to reconfigure the perspective presented by Babylonian paganism in effectively turning it into the revelation of monotheism most of us know in our modern world. This of course argues whether paganism was really paganism and not just a spiritual method of focusing on each part of Creation separately, but that's a whole other issue.

Getting back to Nibiru, in the Enûma Eliš there is a great hero-god: Marduk. Astrologically it may well be worth also remembering that this all took place in the Age of Aries, which was very hero/god oriented. More importantly, Marduk is the name Nibiru leads back to. And Marduk is associated with Jupiter: justice, righteousness, the higher perspective and learning better stuff.

So to return to modern times and underground conspiracies... if you're going with the name Nibiru no, sorry, no death planet implied, folks.

As for the Mayan calendar, one of the most interesting things about the Mayan system of calendrics is that it's the only calendar known to have been structured to run backward as well as forward. The implication in this is historical in every sense: evidently the Maya (who were no slouch philosophers and hardly your amateur astronomer-astrologers) understood Existence had already been around a very long time. Einstein probably would have liked the Maya (or felt they had scooped him) because the Maya held that we are 'all the stuff of stars,' and that nothing about Existence is ever lost - the precursor of E=mc2. In all of this is the implication that the Maya knew there had been Long Count rounds of their calendar (plural) prior to its official and classic Maya 'calendar start' date of August 11, 3114 BCE (Gregorian, which equals 6 September in Julian).

More to the point, there is very little to thus suggest the Maya thought the end of any calendar round meant the end of the world itself. What they did evidently believe was that the end of every calendar round would be marked by great change - a evolutionary (perhaps even revolutionary) advancement of mankind's understanding of existence. The Maya established their calendar at a point of founding what they saw as their own 'great advance in understanding' which was plainly part spiritual and part societal - from 3114 forward is where we see the Maya building their vast and amazing cities and all the infrastructure which went with that.

Infrastructure. Hmmmm... we have been hearing a lot about infrastructure of late.

As for how they spoke of the turmoil which would precede such a shift it probably does us well to remember where the Maya lived and the fact that nobody had AK47's in their time. The uplands of central America are dotted with volcanoes and covered with rainforest which (yes,) says it rains a lot, leading to the occasional flood. So do we think it's shocking that they spoke of turmoil in such terms? Besides all that, the Maya were a people who even by modern standards were particularly graphic - and grandly earthy. They had no cultural objection to having their kings stand at the top of a pyramid before thousands of citizens having their penis pierced to provide drops of ceremonial blood (which were then burned to demonstrate the E=mc2 thing).

And ladies? Lest you think we were left out in Mayan times, we weren't. Mayan queens had their tongues pierced to provide blood too, which would lead us to contemplate that the comparison of chosen body parts (penis versus tongue) suggests that the Maya were pragmatic in ways we modern types haven't yet found the stomach to get close to.

It also says that some things never change. (Duh!)

But as for the dire warnings in Maya text, let's be realistic from where we stand today. Who among us would think it 'unthinkable' that a leader of one's time (be they religious, spiritual, cultural, secular or familial) would hesitate to speak in the terms which would reach the popular psyche of the time? Whether you're leading a nation, a religion, a corporation, family or social group, getting a response requires speaking the language of your audience in such a way which appeals to their emotions, be that lust, greed or that unfortunately highly popular choice, fear.

This is the lesson Hollywood understands so very well: emotions and shock value. But humans aren't new. We've been dealing in emotions and shock value throughout our long (or not-so-long, depending on how you see it) existence. History is rife with it. Politics thrives on it. Religion depends on it. We are nothing without our emotions and there's nothing like a good dose of fear (or its cousin, anxiety) to get people moving. Thinking. Buzzing. Fear is a primal key to vulnerability just as love is the key to self worth and independence.

Yet the place where all these themes do converge is at the idea that we humans of Earth may be in for a shock. Some think this will come in the form of aliens - which may be, I'm not against that concept. Just a cursory look at how many planets and stars (which may have planets in orbits) and galaxies out there suggests it's an awfully big universe, and to think we're the only form of intelligent life is really pushing it. Although yes, the question may well be 'how intelligent are we - really?' Those say 'yes, we're it' stand in the lee of a three letter word (e-g-o) which may be the whole crux of the issue. Who are we as humans and what are we doing with our lives and on this planet and as part of the greater cosmos?

If aliens do show up, the one thing they'd do without so much as lifting a ray gun or otherwise uttering immortal words like "Hail, Earthlings!" would be to teach us that we're not the top of the pile. And maybe in showing us that we're not the do-all, end-all of the universe, we'd learn a little humility - from which we'd learn to stop worrying and start thanking, to stop lounging and start contributing, participating, thinking more about the Big than little picture. Maybe if we realized we're just kids on the cosmic block we'll start playing nice with each other.

And who knows... if we're good, maybe those aliens will bring us milk and cookies.

Astrology does say this is a time of shifts from personal to societal, from me-and-mine to 'we're all in this together.' That much is plainly clear and if we look around us, clearly plainly needed.
But as for "Planet X" and Nibiru the Killer Planet, that's probably off base - unless the death is to our egotistical notion that we know it all and are the best thing since the invention of the atom.

Before I close, one last note - the 'PS' which may explain the whole discussion. That Nibiru and "Planet X" are associated with Eris is probably a tip off. After all, what's better in the world of discord than making people think the end of the world is coming?
